Why Should You Replace Your Old Amalgam Fillings?

Amalgam used to be dentists’ favourite filling material. Amalgam fillings were an easy, affordable, and long-lasting solution when done appropriately. However, as the technology for dentistry evolved, the problems with amalgam became clearer.

The Problems with Amalgam Fillings

For one thing, amalgam totally lacks visual appeal.

More importantly, it’s not possible to chemically bond amalgam to tooth structure and is placed in the tooth with the help of physical undercuts. And to do that, the dentist must remove healthy tooth structure to hold in place an amalgam filling.

Another problem with amalgam is that it contracts and expands, and can lead to fractures and cracks in the tooth or the filling itself. There are even concerns about the presence of mercury in amalgam.

At Lygon Dental, we do not recommend replacing any filling just for the sake of it. If your amalgam filling is well-designed and intact, take good care of it. Replace your amalgam filling only if there are signs that warrant it.

For instance, if there are any signs of decay around the amalgam filling, cracking or chipping, then it’s better to replace your old amalgam filling. You might also choose to replace your old amalgam filling simply for aesthetic reasons.

Alternatives to Amalgam Fillings

Essentially, there are two alternative solutions to amalgam fillings – composite fillings that are made of resin and CEREC fillings that are made of porcelain.

Composite Fillings – These resin-based fillings are made up of plastic and powdered glass. They’re a wonderful solution for smaller cavities. It’s also possible to match it to the natural colour of your tooth. When aesthetic appeal is the prime factor, especially for the front teeth, composite fillings are a great option. They are also an affordable solution when compared to CEREC fillings. What’s more, our dental experts at Lygon Dental can place composite fillings in a single appointment.

CEREC Porcelain Fillings – When you want to replace larger fillings, CEREC porcelain is a better material. It is highly durable, offers high aesthetic appeal, and assures at least 90% success rate after 10 years. Porcelain fillings look natural and are very strong.  They are also biocompatible and last far more than any other kind of fillings.
